The entourage effect describes the mechanism that reveals the full potential of CBD when consumed with the other components of the plant such as THC, other cannabinoids and terpenes naturally present in hemp.
Dr Raphael Mechoulam, who has studied this plant for over 50 years, coined this term. He discovered that all compounds present in the plant (including other cannabinoids, chlorophyll, fatty acids, terpenes and flavonoids) play a role in the medicinal effects of the plant.
Research conducted in 1998 supported the theory of the entourage effect when fatty acids in cannabis and hemp were proven to help certain cannabinoids bind to cannabinoid receptors in our bodies. More recently, a team of scientists investigated whether the entourage effect could increase the effectiveness of CBD as an anti-inflammatory. They then noticed that purified cannabidiol produced a bell-shaped response curve.
In other words, the effectiveness of the single cannabidiol molecule peaked within a limited dose range. Administering too much CBD had similar therapeutic effects as giving too little. When whole plant extracts were used, the results revealed that the more CBD administered, the better the effects.
Another study also highlighted the synergy that occurs when the cannabinoids THC and CBD work together. It showed that cannabidiol enhances the clinical effectiveness of THC. It also revealed that CBD acts as a neuroprotectant against THC. It counters many of the undesirable effects of THC and thus reduces feelings of intoxication and sedation.
