Side effects of CBD

Listen to this article:

Cannabidiol is one of over 100 known cannabinoids that can be found in hemp plants. We know its benefits and millions of people consume it every day around the world. But what about its side effects of CBD? According to a study carried out in 2011, the molecule is not dangerous for health, and has few identified side effects. Further research in 2017 confirmed CBD's favorable safety profile, adding that possible side effects were indeed both mild and infrequent.

What are the side effects of CBD?

In most clinical studies, testing was done with high doses to evaluate the side effects of CBD. In these study cases, the adverse effects observed were as follows:

  • Dry mouth
  • Drowsiness and fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea

Another study also found that Cannabidiol has the ability to lower blood pressure in humans. This ability can be beneficial for some but can be problematic for people with low blood pressure.

Is CBD addictive?

Cannabidiol is not addictive in any way and there are no Cannabidiol withdrawal symptoms when you stop consuming it. The World Health Organization (WHO) also indicated in a report published in 2017 that “CBD does not present any effects indicating a potential for abuse or dependence.”

Side effect of CBD: Red eyes?

Red eyes are caused by the THC in CBD flowers . THC actually lowers pressure in the eyes, while increasing blood flow, which can cause redness. It is also this reduction in eye pressure that promotes the treatment of glaucoma. Redness can also come from smoke when it gets into your eyes. Red eyes are therefore not a possible side effect for CBD oils or broad-spectrum CBD capsules (THC-free).

Can you overdose on CBD?

The research mentioned above indicates that high doses of Cannabidiol are generally well tolerated. Other work , however, revealed that extremely high doses of Cannabidiol could cause liver damage in some mice, but in quantities that were almost impossible to take (the equivalent of 50,000 mg per day for several days in a row for an adult 80 kg).
We therefore do not include the risk of overdose among the possible side effects of CBD. Even if you take very high doses, you will not die, but you may experience unwanted side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea and lethargy.

Side effect of CBD: drugs ?

CBD may also affect your body's ability to process certain medications, including blood thinners. Therefore, if you are taking medication, talk to your doctor before consuming it, to avoid any drug interactions.

CBD and fertility, pregnancy and breastfeeding

The potential of Cannabidiol to help with fertility is often cited because its relaxing effects are beneficial for our sex life . However, research conducted in 2019 concluded that CBD may have a harmful effect on animal embryos and fetuses. We therefore strongly advise against its consumption during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Conclusion on the side effects of CBD

Side effects exist, but remain limited. Apart from the special cases mentioned above, you take little risk in consuming CBD. The challenge is above all to control your consumption, as you would for any product.
